How to remove super glue from countertop: Wet glue
Glue is much easier to remove when it’s still wet, so act quickly! Here’s how to get super glue off counters:
- Get a damp sponge or paper towel.
- Rub the stain until it’s completely gone.
If you’ve spilled a larger amount of glue or the stain is particularly stubborn, you may have to wait until the remaining glue has dried before you can remove it (see below).
Avoid spills in the future by using Loctite Super Glue Liquid Control. This glue comes with a range of applicators for greater precision, making mishaps less likely.
How to remove super glue from countertop: Dry glue
It takes longer to remove glue once it’s cured, but a bit of perseverance pays off. There are two techniques you can try; if the first doesn’t work, try the acetone method instead.
The scrape, soak and scrub method
- Scrape away excess glue. Use a putty knife or another sharp object or hard edge. Make sure you’re scraping the glue and not the countertop, or you might damage the surface.
- Soak the glue. Cover any remaining residue with a damp cloth or towel. Warm water will soften the glue.
- Scrub the glue. Use the rough side of a sponge dipped in warm, soapy water to scrub off the last of the glue.
The acetone method
If the glue hasn’t gone after scrubbing, get out a bottle of nail polish remover containing acetone and follow these steps:
- Soak a cotton ball in acetone.
- Gently rub the glue. Be careful to rub the glue, not the countertop. The glue should start to loosen.
- Scrape away the remaining glue with a knife. Again, make sure you’re not cutting into the surface of the counter.
Acetone is basically suitable for any countertop, whether it’s laminate, quartz, marble, corian or granite. Since there’s always a slight risk of discolouration, test the acetone on a small, less visible part of the surface first.
