How to repair ripped leather: Step by step
If you have a clean rip without frayed edges, gluing is straight forward. Here’s how to repair ripped leather with Loctite Super Glue Power Gel Control.
- Clean surfaces and make sure that the bonded areas are close-fitting.
- Lightly dampen porous substrates with a wet cloth.
- Screw closure clockwise to activate the pack and remove the top.
- Lightly press the application wings to distribute the adhesive. Apply a small bead along one edge of the ripped leather.
- Join the parts and hold in place for at least 30 seconds.
- Leave to cure for 10 minutes, or overnight to allow full bond strength to develop.
How to patch a leather couch
Larger tears in leather might require a sub-patch installation. Inserting a sub-patch will serve to strengthen the bond and hold the rip together more effectively. Here’s how to repair leather seats with a sub-patch.
- Clean the area you’re repairing.
- Cut the sub-patch to fit the hole and slide it under the surface of the leather. Make sure the patch sits smoothly under the leather and is free of lumps or imperfections.
- Apply Loctite Super Glue Liquid Brush On to both sides of the tear, and on the patch.
- Quickly wipe off any excess glue.
- Place the seam back together and hold in place.
- Secure the seam with masking tape and leave to set for approximately 2 hours.
- Remove the tape and wipe away excess residue.
